DIY Powder Make-up

Okay, so It is shameful how little I've updated this blog! My old one I could get something up on at least once a week and that was in the middle of semesters! Oh well, I blame finals, vaccinations and a very bad cold, not to mention the general wanderlusting that goes along with summer and, wallah, you get two blog posts and a products page.

Well, that stops here ladies and gentlemen! My goal now is a reasonable post every week!

So to start that off right I want to do a tutorial about a favorite new hobby: homemade make-up. I have finally found a cost effective, skin pleasing and workable way to make powdered make-up. This recipe cuts out harmful chemical substances like Talc and synthetic preservatives found in most store bought altunatives but doesn't make you have to compromise things like your money or your beauty.

And it's super easy! Let's get started.

Step 1. Gather all your ingredients. You'll need the following:
 1)Arrowroot Powder
2) Coco powder (unsweetened)
3) Cinniamin
4) A container with a lid to keep out mostiure
5) Something to stir with. A spoon worked the best for me.

Step 2) Mix!! Decide how much make-up want to make.  Pour that much Arrowroot powder into your container. Then start adding small amounts of the coco powder and cinnamon until the pigment is close to your skin type. Use minimal amount of the cinnamon as it can irritate skin in large quantities, but you would need to be using upwards of a heaping tablespoon for that to happen. Mixing can take awhile since the powders don't seem to want to interact. Just keep smooshing them together with the flat of your spoon.

And that's it! It's that simple. Since Arrowroot, Coco Powder and Cinnamon are pretty cheap this is a very frugal option.

But wait! There's more!

Since I've been terrible about updating I'm going to expand on this tutorial and show you how to make the above powder into.....PRESSED POWDER. I know, it's exciting.

If you're like me when it comes to beauty regimes, than you probably end up throwing on powder while talking on the phone, while driving and eating. I don't even want to know how many dollars worth of loose powder my car seat has absorbed. So pressed powder and I are good friends. And again, this is easy!!

Step 1. Gather all your ingredients.
1) Two heaping spoonfuls of your powder
2) A mixing container
3) An old empty compact
4) Veggie Glycerin (Found in the first aid section of most stores. It's great for your skin!!)
5) Water
6) Optional: A few drops of Jojoba oil (Also great for skin! It's actually a liquid wax that will dry and help hold to powder together but if you don't have it, that's fine.)

Step 2. Mix!  Add about a 1/8th of a teaspoon glycerin into the mixture and a few drops Jojoba oil. Then add water, about  1/2 a teaspoon at a time, until you get a glue consistency.

Step 3. Pour into your empty compact. Leave to compact open, and on a level surface, for several days until the powder drys. This can take a few weeks based on the climate in which you live. It will look dark but with brush on dry and smooth!! (See black compact in top photo)

And that's it! Both are super easy.  Leave a comment and let me know who it works for you!

Make Your Own Deodorant!

Okay, so here's another way to carve a bit off your shopping bill! This literally took my sister and I about 5 min. from start to finish.

Why, do you ask, would one want to make deodorant? Well, quite apart from being cheaper, it's also MUCH better for your skin! Just because the armpit gets a bad wrap because of BO and unwanted hair doesn't mean we should mistreat it! The skin under your arms is actually quite sensitive and absorbent. Unfortunately, the average bar of store bought deodorant is chalk full of harmful, irritating chemicals that can cause breakouts.
But did you also know that most deodorants contain Talc? Talc is a mineral ground from talc rocks and, during the grounding process,  creates fibers that are very similar to asbestos. Many studies have shown time and time again that Talc can cause lung, ovarian and skin cancer but the FDA hasn't banned it from beauty products OR food.

So, not something you really want to be rubbing on your skin everyday, huh? Well, just make your own! Here's what you'll need:

Coconut Oil: about 7 tablespoons
Baking Soda: 1/2 cup
Arrowroot powder (for Talc free cornstarch): 1/2 cup
Essential oil: few drops

Now, coconut oil is a solid at room temperature so you'll need to warm it up in the microwave for about 30 secs. When it's soft, mix in the arrowroot powder, baking soda and essential oil (I left this out because I like the smell of just the coconut oil but Lavender E/O would be a great choice).  It will get tacky as the coconut oil cools leaving you with a icing-like mixture that can be stored at room temp!

Hello and Welcome to SoapManna!
This is my dream job....making organic soap, sharing it and then getting to write about it! My journey to making organic soap started about a year ago when I noticed how much my husband and I spend on household detergents each month! I started trying to find ways to cut corners which led me from making homemade laundry detergent to cold process soap.
And it wasn't just the money we're saving that got me really excited about my little hobby. I never realized how many chemicals we were exposing our skin to! I have very sensitive skin that's prone to dryness and breakouts and(though he doesn't like to admit it!) my husband has equally finicky skin that causes frequent irritation. You wouldn't believe the difference we've seen just by trying to cut out chemically ridden shampoos and body washes and replaced them with organic homemade soaps made from natural oils.
I got tired of not knowing what I was subjecting my body to! Trying to dicier ingredients like hydroxypropyltrimolinium chloride and tetrasodium EDTA- and when I was able to...well, lets just say sometime ignorance is bliss.

For example, I recently found out that I'm allergic to forms of synthetic methyl. Actually, this is a fairly common problem among people who also suffer form psoriasis, like I do. So guess what's in my super expensive shampoo that is supposed to be so genteel, especially for people with skin conditions?? Yep, two different forms of methyl. Great! 35$ a bottle and it's just making my problem worse!
So now I make my own! Check it out!

Lavender Rosemary Shampoo Bars:

Ingredients: Coconut oil, Palm oil, Castor oil, Olive oil, Avocado oil
Water, Lye, Lavender Essential Oil,  Rosemary Essential Oil
As you can see, there is nothing in these awesome bars that is going to be a determent to my skin! Not only that, the all natural oils nourish my hair to the point that I don't even need conditioner anymore! (and my I tell you that my hair is extremely dry). The Lavender essential oil is great for soothing my skin and stimulates hair growth. The rosemary makes my hair glossy and increases blood flow to my roots!
All in all, a wholesome alternative to chemically ridden shampoo!
